Too big? Too small? Nah, just right.
On a recent flight, I watched an episode of Tiny House Nation. A young couple was building a 500 square foot house with room for their two active dogs to boot! While I knew of the popular TV show, to be honest, I had never watched it. Given that FREESPACES makes a living making order out of chaos, I was intrigued. Could they really pull this off and create a living space that was actually big enough to be inviting, functional and attractive? The answer was yes…The goal was accomplished through creative design, a strong focus on the homeowner’s priorities and ORGANIZING their SPACE!
It’s not hard to guess the premise behind the “tiny house” movement – less is more, leave a smaller footprint on the planet, and gain financial freedom and more free time to pursue passions instead of possessions. Inherent in this mind set is a desire to streamline and live in our homes with ease and efficiency.
Goldilocks knew what was too big, what was too small, and what was just right. We can learn from this classic fairytale how to honestly assess and accurately scale our space and our stuff.
FREESPACES finds the “tiny house” phenomenon a BIG IDEA actually. It is the literal incarnation of a larger movement gaining currency every day: own less, organize more, and experience less stress and more living — whether that’s traveling or just sitting on your porch with a dog in your lap and a good book. The point is that, regardless of square feet, there’s an increasing awareness that how our space is organized affects how we FEEL and is linked quite closely to our emotional, functional and physical selves.
FREESPACES isn’t advocating tiny houses for everyone. In fact, FREESPACES just finished a job organizing a BIG home and we loved every inch of it! Let’s face it, even a small home can become one giant disaster area without strategies and systems to keep things in place. There are lessons to be applied from the tiny house concept — keeping it simple, putting a premium on function and finding a place for everything that’s important to you.
However, our approach isn’t about square footage. We believe tiny homes and grand estates and everything in between are all wonderful places to get organized! So whether you live in a 500 or 5,000 square foot home, our philosophy is about helping people organize the space they live in. When we can cross over that line, it enables us to better enjoy our homes and gain a sense of freedom from the multitude of “stuff” that our active, hectic lives dump on our doorstep 24/7. Some professional organizers take the approach that you just have too much stuff, and yes, we all know that we could live with less.
